Buick Achiever Nartezya Dykes Named A UNCF “Rising Star”

First-generation college student honored during “An Evening of Stars” televised event

When Nartezya Dykes dreamed of being the first in her family to attend college, she probably didn’t envision herself walking the red carpet at a gala event surrounded by Hollywood’s biggest stars. Dykes, along with two other recipients of the Buick Achievers Scholarship Award, found herself doing just that this past weekend at the UNCF’s (United Negro College Fund) 35th annual “An Evening of Stars” fundraiser.

“The Buick Achievers scholarship has opened so many doors for me and my family,” said Dykes, who is pursuing a degree in computer science at Spelman College. “It has allowed me to focus solely on receiving the best education possible. I’m setting the standard and inspiring others in my family to reach their full potential by pursuing a higher education.”

In addition to attending the event, all three students also participated in panel discussions during the “Empower Me Tour,” a free, college- and career-readiness road show that was established by UNCF to help motivate students to pursue academic excellence. Hosted by Morehouse College, GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard was also on hand to deliver opening remarks and encourage attending students to never stop learning.
